STEEL ARMOR BUCKLES AND RELATED HARDWARE-PAGE 1
(Can also be made in brass and nickel-silver)
The
steel buckles and hardware in this selection have been either patterned
after originals, or inspired by originals and decorated with similar
flair. Most original armor buckles were made from iron or
steel because of its strength. Some
were gilded (covered with gold leaf) or silvered, but most latten
(brass) buckles were used for garters, pouches, and similar mundane
items. I've always had trouble
finding decent steel buckles that could be used for armor,
so I eventually
decided to make them myself. I studied photos of many
originals
dating from the 14th to the 17th C. I tried to settle on
patterns that were reasonably simple to reproduce and covered a wide
range of applications. The results are shown here.
All of the hardware here is designed to fit 5/8" strapping (16 mm).
I may offer a larger size in the future if there is a call
for it.
