This helmet is designed to be an affordable "Roman-looking" helmet for
SCA combat. The design was inspired by various iron Gallic helmets of
the 1st C AD. It is not intended to be an exact copy of any authentic
helmet type, but its relative simplicity is intended to keep the price
reasonable.
It has a proper tenoned brow reinforce and proper rivet bosses, but
instead of complicated embossing, it
has stylized applique plates to represent standard features found on
historical examples, and the neck guard is of riveted construction.
There have been a lot changes and improvements made to this helmet
design over the years.
Showing the standard version:
(Note
that the newer version has a perf-plate insert in
the ear area instead of the Y-bar shown here. Patterns are
always evolving.)
Showing a helmet that has been lightened somewhat
for a combat archery role. It has all 14 ga construction and
3/16" bars in the grill instead of the more usual 1/4". It
also has been chemically blued, which is an available option.
(Other than these modifications, it shows all of the pattern
changes that are current as of the time of this writing.)
