ROMAN GALLIC J HELMET
"BELLS & WHISTLES MODEL"
An example of the Imperial Roman "Gallic J" helmet was found in
Hungary, and dates to the late 1st C AD. The helmet shown here is
closely modeled after it, with minor deviation. The Gallic J style was
chosen because the design is well-suited to being adapted for rattan
combat, particularly the shape of the neck guard and the narrow brow
guard.
This model, which I dubbed "Bells and Whistles", has all the requisite
features found on the original example, including embossed decoration,
rivet bosses, crest holder attachments, and properly tenoned brow guard.
Only a few minor liberties were taken with the details, in an effort to
better adapt it to rattan combat.
The only significant design element which was found on the original
which is not a standard feature of this model is a brass carrying handle, which was
mounted in the center of the rear neck guard. This feature may also be
added for an additional cost. One has been installed on the example below.
This helmet comes standard with a buffed polish.

the crest-holder mount. In this case it is a dummy, added just
for bling and to make the helmet look complete. It has a solid
metal plug underneath which prevents damage but also makes it unusable
for its intended purpose. Other options are possible.
